Survivor: Asylum Island, Episode 02

Previously, on Survivor: Asylum Island…

Twenty Cherry Hollow patients were divided into four tribes of five, stranded on separate islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is said that this was to be a behavioral experiment. Some tribes seemed to gel, while other tribes did not. At the reward/immunity challenge, Prozac and Diazepam got an early lead, while Xanax and Thorazine quickly fell behind. In the end, Prozac won the race, winning them both flint and a firemaking kit. Diazepam and Xanax also received flint, and while Thorazine won a trip to tribal council, they also received the right to banish the first person, Kael, to Asylum Island, an underground seclusion chamber.

Nineteen are left. Who will be voted out tonight?

Doomed to spend another long, cold night without supplies, the Thorazine tribe, now only four member strong, tries to regroup. Nadia, Oscar, and Alex huddle together, trying to shield each other from the wind, while Anthony paces along the shore.

“I’m confident that we can control him,” Oscar tells his teammates. “As long as we play along to his little game about his father.”

In the morning, along with tree mail, the Thorazine tribe is relieved to find some flint. “It’s a relief,” says Nadia. seriously, “We were in serious need of warmth. Our conditions were all getting worse without it.” After many tries, Anthony is the one that is able to start the fire, having watched many episodes of MacGyver to help him figure out the best tactic.

Meanwhile at Xanax, Tatsuya was becoming comfortable with his position in the tribe, and enjoys getting under the skin of Reginald, Cameron, and Lynne while Kael is away at Asylum Island. All three seem to fall for his games, and quickly are becoming agitated and scatter about the beach. “He’s crazy,” Cameron explained, anxiously hiding her eyes with her hand. “I don’t have my sunglasses out here, so I’m exposed to him, and he’s just eating it up like a hungry bear.”

On the beach of the Diazepam tribe, Reiley is being flirtatious, grating the nerves of tribemates Colleen Graves and Oktober Kavanagh. “I don’t know what her deal is,” Colleen complains to Oktober. “She just wants to get in everyone’s pants, that’s her only focus. She’s going to end up screwing us over.” Oktober agrees, and they wonder if Reiley should be the next to go.

On the other hand, things seem to be clicking with the Prozac tribe. Even Melisane’s flirty attitude does not seem to bother her tribe mates. “Maddox and Asam are quiet, not exactly receptive, but appreciative,” she comments. “Joanie and Kelsey are lookers themselves, so we’ll see what happens.”

Huddled away from the glaring taunts of Tatsuya, while the little Asian climbs a tree to find himself a coconut, the Xanax tribe makes plans. “I am not entirely convinced that we need his assistance,” Reginald told the women, Lynne and Cameron. “He will only hinder us if he continues to be so disrespectful.” As a Noir, Reginald clearly demanded respect. The three plotted to throw the next challenge in order to vote Tatsuya in order to gel the rest of their tribe.

“I’m sure we could do without him,” Cameron agreed, “But I don’t feel right throwing the challenge without being able to discuss it with Kael first.” She spoke on behalf of their fifth tribe mate, who was still trapped on Asylum Island.

The four tribes square off again for Immunity and Reward as this time Dr. Carver Greely explains the challenge. Each tribe must remember a historical story of Denbigh Asylum. Tied together as a group, the tribe must make their way over and under logs and through a field of poles, gathering seven answer flags. Once they cross a two-line rope bridge over a pit of water, they must use the seven answer flags collected to solve five questions about the story. The first tribe to answer the five questions correctly wins Immunity and two large tarps as a Reward. The first three tribes to finish win Immunity and are safe from Tribal Council. The losing tribe decides who will go to Asylum Island.

Because Xanax, Diazepam, and Prozac are all with five members, while only Thorazine has four, each of the larger tribes will have to sit out a member. Diazepam and Prozac quickly decided to sit out two of their weaker players, Oktober and Joanie, while Xanax struggles to come to a decision. Kael wants to sit out Tatsuya, who he doesn’t trust, while his tribe mates seem to think Kael, their strongest player, should sit out since he looks drained returning from Asylum Island. Dr. Greely pressures them for a decision, and in the end, Kael sits out.

The horn is sounded and the tribes are off. While all tribes are hurrying to get through the maze of logs an poles, Tatsuya seems content to upset the balance of his tribe, causing them to fall behind. Diazepam and Thorazine take up an early lead, and it is they who get to the set of questions before anyone else. It turns out Anthony has a memory like a steel trap, and Thorazine easily answers all of their questions, securing victory and winning the reward. Diazepam finishes a disappointing second, but it is Tatsuya’s lollygagging that seals the fate of the Xanax tribe, with Prozac well ahead of them. Politely the team lets Kael decide who goes to Asylum Island. He chooses to lock away Alaric, who is one of the strongest players for Diazepam. Alaric is given a flurry of hugs and friendly kisses from the girls on his tribe before he goes.

Back at camp, Kael is furious with his tribe for not listening to his strategy. Clearly he is worn out emotionally and physically from his visit to Asylum Island, where he admits he suffered from horrible flashbacks of the Iraq War. Still, he can’t believe their stupidity. Kael confronts Reginald, who admits his plan to throw the challenge in order to get rid of Tatsuya. Kael cannot believe it. “A soldier does not scheme to get rid of his brothers, whether he likes them or not!” he bellowed at Reginald. He decided he simply could not work with someone like Reginald, and confides this to Cameron. “I might not have trusted Tatsuya,” he explains, “Because he is a miserable, manipulative person. But Reginald is arrogant and deceitful.”

“I realize that I’m the swing vote,” Cameron finds herself trapped in the middle. “Both sides want me to side with them to make the decision. I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

At tribal council, Tatsuya admits he knew that they had planned to throw the challenge, so he did it for them. “It was like watching a carnival,” he told Dr. Graves and Dr. Greely. “If I was going to go out, I wanted to go out after making some people squirm.”

In the end, Cameron stayed true to the original plan to off the Sociopath, and Tatsuya Yamamoto was voted out with a 3-2 vote. “The tribe has spoken,” Naomi said to him, but Tatsuya put out his torch with his hand before the head doctor could beat him to it.

Dr. Greely led Tatsuya away. Tatsu’s final words: “Cameron’s face is just too ugly for me. I can’t wait to get off of the damn island.”

Eighteen are left, who will be voted out next?
