Name: Sophie Blackburn
Age: 27

Sophie married Nick in hopes of starting a family. She was an “accidental” baby, and always felt that her mother didn’t really love her because the father did not stick around. Turning that around, she wanted to have a baby that she would love more than anything in the world. When she met Nick, who was as dedicated as a man could be, Sophie had hope that her dreams could finally come true. After a quick marriage, they immediately started work on having a baby. Soon enough, Sophie was pregnant. A few months into the pregnancy, however, she miscarried. She and her husband were devastated. However, after just few months of mourning, Sophie was ready to get back on track and try again.

Sophie never went to college. Even in high school, she wasn’t the best of students, so her concept of English is not the best. Sophie quit her job at a nursery when she found out she was pregnant, in order to be a full-time mom. Though currently unemployed, Sophie has been looking for a job where she can apply her desire to design. She is very creative, and it is evident in the way she keeps house. She spends a lot of time in the nursery, imagining what it would be like to have a baby.





Name: Nicholas (Nick) Blackburn
Age: 28

Nick married Sophie because she took his breath away. He always considered himself to be just an “average Joe,” so when he met Sophie, he was pleasantly surprised that she took such interest in him. Nick romanced her, wined and dined her, and married her because he loved her. When they got pregnant, he was as excited as Sophie. However, after the miscarriage, he was devastated. Unlike Sophie, Nick was not able to bounce back onto his feet. He required a much longer period to heal. He bought Sylvia (the puppy) because he hoped it would fill the “void” in Sophie’s heart by giving her something to care for, and at the same time help him to heal.

Nick attended community college. He works full time at a corporate business where is unelaborated job is to put together packages for clients, which other employees have done the “brunt of the work” for. He longs to be a front-man, but is too shy to step up to the plate. Regardless, he often works over time, hoping to prove himself.

Treatment for Idea A (Sylvia)

INT – Bathroom – Night (Sadie, Nick)
Sadie is standing in the doorway looking into the room where the faucet is leaking. She recalls the night she realized that she was having a miscarriage (flashback).

INT – Kitchen – Day (Sadie, Nick, Puppy)
The following day Nick comes home with a surprise. He has bought a puppy! Sadie is unsure how to react. He doesn’t know what to name the puppy. She wants a baby and feels that Nick is trying to “replace” their lost child with the puppy. They argue.

INT – Bedroom – Night (Sadie, Nick)
Sadie and Nick are lying in bed. She is awake, he is not. She nudges him, and wants to talk. She casually suggests that they make love, even though they have not made up about their fight. Nick tells her that he is not ready. She leaves the bed, saying that she cannot sleep next to him anymore.

INT –Living Room –Day (Sadie, Puppy)
Sadie is watching television, feeling depressed. The puppy is laying next to the couch. She is frustrated, begins yelling at the television. The puppy rests his chin on her stomach. Angry, Sadie backhands the dog, who whimpers and sulks away. Sadie apologies to the dog, and begins to feel guilty.

INT –Kitchen –Night (Sadie, Nick, Puppy)
Nick comes home very late from work. Sadie begins to tear into him, but he says he doesn’t want to hear it. The puppy whines from under the table, Sadie reaches to comfort her. Nick is confused, saying that he thought she didn’t want the puppy. Sadie begins to cry, she unburdens her soul while holding the dog. Sadie tells Nick she wants to call the dog Sylvia, after their mother. Nick tells her that they will try again, someday.
